Great points, Perry. I started training with running group in the south suburbs of Chicago about two years ago and it has helped me improve as a runner immensely. I think the biggest benefit is that through all your conversations, especially on out-and-back 20-milers you get to know each other really well and you benefit from the group's collective experience. I've gotten so much good advice from the veteran runners in the group, particularly on how to train properly, what to eat, and different race strategies. Because of their advice I was able to shave about 40 mins off of my marathon time within two years and finally qualify and run Boston. Training with a group for a marathon is a lot of fun because everyone goes through the same highs and lows together along the way and the common experience makes the bond stronger.

I joggle solo. I do like the meeting with a group every now and then. It's just more efficient to joggle alone in my small city (saves gas, time, logistics, etc). I think running groups are great, but they're just not convenient enough for me because I'd have to drive to the location they're meeting and that wastes time.
