Should you eat before you run

Since their website is unbearably slow to load, I’ll quote a recent Runner’s World tip that I saw.
Wait for about two hours after a meal before running. You can probably
run 90 minutes after a light, high-carb meal, while you need up to
three hours after a heavy meal that’s high in protein and fat.
Interesting advice. [...]

Gift ideas for your favorite joggler

The good folks over at Complete Running have put together a list of 25 gift ideas for a runner (or joggler).
I think the following are pretty good.
1. Body Glide: We wrote about this in a previous chafing post.
4. Magnetic Runner Night Light: Good for joggling in the dark.
6. Lock laces. [...]

4 things to enlighten your dark runs

Did you know that the Earth is closest to the Sun in January? This seems strange to a guy from Chicago because it’s so dark and cold in January. Then I remember that seasons are more related to the tilt of the Earth than they are to the closeness of the Sun. [...]

A new joggling wine discovered

For Thanksgiving my wife and I drove to Maryland to visit her grandfather and other relatives. A fabulous trip even though we drove (about 14 hours one way). I’m a fan of long driving trips and we played a number of trivia-type games to pass the time. My wife’s sister and her [...]

This slip of metal could save your life

One weekend I was joggling home from the lakefront and nearly got hit by a car. It was a typical scene, I was running down the sidewalk and came up to an alley. As I stepped to cross the alley a huge, obnoxious SUV comes barreling out. Just as I got in [...]

Should you run if you are sick?

It happened Sunday. Woke up and felt a hot sensation behind my eyes. My throat was scratchy and then my tinnitus kicked in. A cold had taken hold. Now, I don’t mind getting colds. Sickness makes you appreciate the days when you’re not sick.
But I had plans for this morning, [...]

Is BMI bogus?

One of the keys to getting faster is to lose some weight. To look at me you wouldn’t think that I’m overweight. I don’t think so either. However, when my numbers are run through the BMI calculator it tells me different. How can a 3-4 times a year marathon runner be [...]

Six tips for running in the cold

Today, I went for an 8 mile joggle from my place to the lake and back. By itself, this isn’t terribly significant but this is Chicago in December. The temperature outside was 10 F with a wind chill that brought it well below zero. This was the coldest joggling of the year. [...]

What does the joggler sound like?

“Juggling is the hard way to do something unnecessary.”

Hey everybody, yesterday I was interviewed on Endurance Planet. This is a cool podcast that interviews different athletes, particularly runners, triathletes and adventure racers. To me it’s the best “sports” podcast around. I often listen to the show while doing my joggling runs.
It’s not [...]
