Many people in this world impress me but the people I find most impressive are the ones who can excell no matter what age they happen to be.
Ed Whitlock is one of these people.
I just read a story describing how he broke the world record for the half marathon in the 80+ age group. He ran an incredible 1:38:59.
What I find most impressive about this is that at age 81 he can still motivate himself to get up off the couch and go for his two-a-day training runs. Where does he get the energy? And how do I get it when I’m that age too?
I will use him as my model as I get older (and a slower).
I’ve always said that while I’m not competitive at my current age group, by the time I get to be in my 80′s I certainly will be. Well, not if there are still guys like Ed Whitlock around. And if I’m not competitive in my 80′s, I’ll be blazing fast in my 90′s.
Incidentally, when I was joggling the Toronto marathon back in 2006, I ran near Ed Whitlock for a spell. I finished that marathon in 3:28. He finished a bit before me in 3:05 I think.
He’s fast.
