Joggling Streak Day 338

by Average Joggler on 10/21/2009

Day 338 of a quest to joggle at least one mile for 1000 days in a row.

Summary: Felt a bit spry today so I tried doing a quick round of joggling. It felt good! No headphones, no drops, and most importantly, no negative self talk. At the start of the workout I was killing my ‘high throws over the telephone poles’ trick. It was great fun. But the favorite part of my run was right in the last half mile. I passed a girl who was talking on the phone. As I went by she looks up and says, “That is awesome!” Then she went on to explain to the person who she was talking to that she had just passed this guy who was juggling while running.

I love joggling.

I’ve been hitting the high throws over traffic light poles and street light poles quite well until… yesterday. I really goofed one short and landed it right on top of a street light pole, and in a spot that wasn’t going to come down :) I did a little 2 ball joggling to mourn the loss of my “beanbag” I used for my first joggling marathon. I saw it still up there today, and I am thinking of ways to try and knock it down safely.

Found this online while reading- about music and working out.
I definitely think joggling and music go very well together-but I am just as fine going without the tunes.

Joe – I’ve always had a fear of losing a bean bag like that. Fortunately, it hasn’t happened. Although I have had a couple of occasions of lost bags. The first was in the 1998 Chicago marathon. It was really crowded in the beginning, I got bumped and dropped 2 balls. I nearly got trampled trying to pick them up so they were lost.

The other time was when I was crossing the street (not at a light) and I saw a car speeding up towards me. In a panic, I ran faster and dropped a bean bag. I made it to the sidewalk but the bag laid in the middle of the street. The car rolled right over it and all I heard was a big “POP”. When I got it, one side had broke open most of the beans spilled out onto the street.

Man, those are funny stories. Yeah, I’ve always been able to retrieve my wayward joggled balls, such as when I got one stuck in a huge tall palm tree. Got it down by throwing the other ball at it to knock it down, did the same thing with a tall pine tree one time.

Well, today after passing the street light coming home from work 2 days in a row and seeing it still stuck up there I decided I would joggle my 6 mile loop and attempt to liberate the beanbag. I joggled to the intersection, got at a good angle, had to avoid throwing the ball into traffic and I couldn’t throw it from the other side because Pensacola Christian College has a tall fence that it could wind up over.

I took one of the birdseed/water balloon juggling balls I made and tossed it 25-30 ft at it. Missed by just a hair. One more toss, and bam! There it falls. 2 tries and I was so elated to have my sentimental bean bag back again. I’ve had that one for over 2 years, and it was the one I used when I started juggling again.

Stuffed that one down the running shorts and continued joggling with the rain repellant homemade juggling balls, in the Pensacola rainy/overcast day. Kinda awkward having an extra ball down the shorts, but I made it work.
