Summary: Today was the second longest run I’ve done all year. The only one that was longer was the Red Rock Canyon marathon. It was great. The weather was near perfect, the running paths were crowded and I felt strong.
I saw a few people I knew including Michelle and Amy, who were on my River to River Relay team. (Which occurs to me that I never wrote up that race report…darn). Anyway, there was a funny / embarrassing moment when a girl on a bike rode up next to me and said “Hi Joggler”, smiled and winked. I wondered if she could see my blushing face through my sunburn.
In the 8th mile, I heard a runner behind me. I could tell that he wanted to pass but I sped up my pace. He kept pressing and I kept going faster. Sometimes it’s good to have people around you to inspire you to run faster. He passed me when I got boxed in by a crowd of walkers. He looked at me, gave a respectful nod and waved. I smiled back and decided to catch him again. After a quart mile of trailing, I passed him. When I stopped to get a drink of water he stopped and we talked a bit.
“How far you going?” I asked.
“I’m just finishing 15,” he said. “How about you?”
“5 miles away from finishing 15,” I said.
“I can’t believe I’m being beaten by a juggler,” he laughs.
“Well, I train a lot,” I said.
“Have good a run,” he says.
“You too,” and I resume joggling staying ahead of him for the next two miles until he turned off the path.
I felt fast.

nice joggle! yeah, i like seeing other runners and people on runs. sometimes i just joggle and don’t even act like i’m doing anything special, just as if i were running. and, other times i’ll give smiles, nods, and tricks to entertain people or communicate with them. i don’t like to be a stone cold runner who is totally oblivious to his environment when running, and also with joggling. i like to be friendly and interact a little. and, at other times i just want to do my thing and not try to act like i am doing anything out of the ordinary while joggling. just do it. like nike said… I think a mixture of both is healthy. It’s a 25/75 mixture for me, 25% of me joggles for the attention/quarkiness/eccentric/rare freedom of joggling; and the other 75% of me joggles because it’s just a fun and physically/mentally liberating thing to do. If you’re all alone out in the open woods joggling, would you still do tricks??? Even if nobody ever saw you do them? I would say yes. But, maybe just a little less frequently. Joggling is fun, even when there’s not an “audience.” Yet, it’s usually a lot more fun when there is.
