Running Tips for Beginning Jogglers

by Average Joggler on July 1, 2009

According to this Newsweek article, June 3, 2009, was the first official joggling pins in a 5K 2003National Running Day. (I did not know that). The article goes on to give some tips for new runners. Here is the short version and a couple extra comments for all you budding young jogglers out there.

Beginner Running Tips

1. Focus on Form – To make running easiest and most efficient you have to keep an upright posture, keep your feet close to the ground, and take short strides.

Joggling will help you stay upright. It’s much more difficult to juggle while hunched over.

2. Mix it up – Don’t continue to run the same routes, speeds and distances. Add some variety to keep your workouts fresh and motivating.

Jogglers can mix it up by using a new set of beanbags, additional beanbags (5 ball joggling) or even joggling with clubs.

3. Add some walking – When you can’t keep running, feel free to take walking breaks. A schedule of one minute walking + three minutes running works for many new runners.

Note joggling while walking is a little tougher because the timing of throws and steps is off unless you make your throws much higher.

4. Spend on socks – By synthetic socks to prevent blisters.

This seems a strange bit of advice. It’s good but not critical. For jogglers, any set of juggling bean bags will work but a set of ultraleather Gballz are great.

5. Run later in the day – It will be less painful. Of course, it will be easier to skip your workout too. Running first thing in the morning is the best advice for most people.

Joggling during the day is best for seeing the biggest crowd.

6. Get shoes that fit – Go to a running shoe store and have them fit you with your first pair of shoes. But it’s not crucial to get a really expensive pair of shoes. ~$40 – $50 shoes is all you really need to spend.

Some have suggested running barefoot is the way to go, but it hurts the bottom of my feet too much

7. There are no rules – Every bit of running advice you hear could be wrong for you. For example, some people like stretching, others don’t bother (I never stretch and experience almost no injuries). The only way to figure out what works for you is to RUN.

And the only way to learn to joggle, is to get out and go JOGGLING

It’s interesting to me you find juggling while walking harder. I’ve been doing that for years without trouble, but have been imagining it is going to be hard to juggle while jogging. Who know? I might be in for a happy surprise.
