What do miles and rain do to joggling balls?

by Average Joggler on 02/13/2010

I just stumbled on these pictures of some of my old joggling balls.jogglingball1

This first set was one that I had used for a couple years. It was a set of ‘More Balls Than Most’ and while they weren’t too bad for joggling, they were a bit slippery. I didn’t like the rainbow colors either.

This next set of jugglebugs was one that I also used for a couple of years. Sadly, they did not last as long as the could have. I dropped the green one while crossing the street and a car ran over it before I could retrieve it.

jogglingballs2Right now I’m using a set of Gballz that I’ve had for over three years. I’ve got a new set on the way but until then, these Gballz will work. The thing that I like about these Gballz,

1. They’re durable
2. They are fun to juggle
3. They don’t pick up odors

You remember the smell of my joggling balls! Those things definitely stink because they are porous and have soaked up sweat and who knows what :) If you ever want to test one in the lab and see what’s on it, let me know.

I dropped a ball today in the street today and retrieved it in plenty of time but thought about the possibility of losing one that way. Glad it hasn’t happened to me yet, but maybe I’d better start carrying an extra one just in case.

Of course, carrying an extra one isn’t very sporting.

I realize that they are not an option in most state side events, but out here I use tennis balls. They respond well to being tossed in the washing machine, which is useful on an island that sees on the order of two hundred inches of rain per year. The recent half-marathon featured heavy tropical rains making a water-friendly joggling ball a must. I would note that I did not manage to joggle through the heaviest sections of tropical rain, thus although I finished the half, I did so only as a jogger, not a joggler.

Tennis balls are a pretty good option especially if you’re going to be joggling in the rain. I just don’t recommend them for beginners because when you drop they are tough to chase after.
