Why Some Goals are Successful and Others Aren’t

by Average Joggler on January 4, 2010

In preparation of my 2010 goal list, I was reviewing my 2009 goals and decided to think about why some things were accomplished and why others 082708-joggling-perryweren’t. This should help me make an even better list.

Reasons Goals Were Completed

1. Convenient
2. Had a purpose
3. Well defined task
4. It was easy to do
5. Someone else made the plans
6. Modified the goal
7. Had a specific deadline
8. Combined with other goals
9. Constantly reminded
10. Didn’t require too much time

Reasons for Failing to Complete Goals

1. Forgot about it
2. It was hard
3. No obvious pay-off
4. Fear
5. Lacked priority
6. Lost interest
7. Didn’t seem important
8. Lacked skills
9. Never made a plan
10. Required other people

Setting Achievable Joggling Goals

As far as my joggling goals went, my failures were primarily related to a lack of skill (e.g qualifying for Boston) & a lack of planning (e.g Joggling a 100 miler).  So, this year I’ve tried to consider those obstacles when making my plan.

2010 Joggling Goals

1.  Joggle every day
2.  Joggle 1500 miles
3.  Do 2 half marathons
4.  Do 4 marathons
5.  Do 3 ultra marathons

Dream Accomplishments

1.  Qualify for Boston (run sub 3:21)
2.  Set world record for joggling 100 miles
3.  Set PR in half marathon distance
4.  Run sub 20 for a 5K

Next Steps…

Alright, now that I’ve set my goals I have to get to work identifying races that I’m going to do.  I know I’ll do the Chicago Marathon and Half Marathon.  I’m also doing the Frozen Otter 32 miler in January.  There’s also a 44-mile race in April that I’m going to do.  Now, I just need to find a few more marathons & the a 100 miler.  Then train, of course.

What running / joggling goals do you have planned for this year?

Sounds like a busy year for joggling achievements!

I plan to joggle the Pensacola Marathon in November, and possibly the Chicago Marathon in October. My main goal is to stay fit and joggle at least 3-4 times a week.

I’m planning to incorporate some joggling into a section of my regular walk/ jog routines and run two 5k’s this year, striving for a better time on each one. The second one I may joggle, depending on how well my arms hold up to the exercise.
Naturally I need to keep my workouts going pretty steady to stay in shape and improve. I also hope to lose some weight–It’ll benefit my knees and make moving a little faster that much easier.
